Thu 24th January @ 7:30 pm
Brighton Early Music Festival (BREMF)
‘Wassail!’ is presented by BREMF Community Choir, and also features violinist James Shenton.
We will be exploring the two different Wassailing traditions: firstly the ‘now give us some figgy pudding’ version, in which groups of wassailers muffle up and sally forth to sing for the gentry and then the custom of ‘Apple Howling’. On old twelfth night (17th Jan) Wassailers would sing to the apple trees, speak sweetly to them and even fire blank rounds into the branches to both encourage the tree and drive away evil spirits, all in the hope of a good crop, come summer. The concert will last about an hour.
