80th Birthday for Brighton Orpheus Choir

This year Brighton Orpheus Choir celebrates it’s 80th birthday! Founded in 1942 to promote social and cultural activities and boost morale during the Second World War.  In 1945 the redoubtable Muriel Hart became the choir’s accompanist, a role she carried out for 71 years until retiring in 2015. Muriel was awarded the MBE for services to music in 2005.

Longevity is a theme at Brighton Orpheus Choir. Patricia Harding directed the choir for 51 years followed by Stella Hull who took on the position in 1999 and led the choir for over 20 years until, sadly, ill health forced her to step down.

The choir is now under the leadership of Nicholas Houghton. It continues to go from strength to strength attracting members from all over Brighton and Hove and as far away as Shoreham and Lewes and now performs three major concerts a year with professional soloists and orchestra.
