Annual Art Show 2021

After having to cancel the art show scheduled for April 2020, which was replaced by a very successful online show last summer, finally, there was a chance for people to see the high-quality artwork by our groups in real life. As usual, we held our Art Show at the Friends’ Meeting House in Brighton, and it ran from 21st to the 24th of July.

Our first live event since 2019 got off to a great start. The traditional private view was celebrated with a  reception in the garden attended by the Mayor, Councillor Alan Robins, and his consort. The invited guests could view the artworks in the hall then return to the garden for refreshments.

The Mayor presented small prizes to the artists whose pictures had been chosen for use in our publicity material for the show, Terry Micklam of Dupont Art Club and Tricia Brennan of Peacehaven Art Club. Terry’s watercolour ‘Golden Gallopers’ was used for the main poster, online, and on advertising fliers, Tricia’s pastel drawing  of an orangutan “Oh what a day” was used on the private view invitations.

During the four days that the show was open 524 visitors were able to view the artworks in a covid-safe environment, with a one-way system and enhanced ventilation. All the pictures were for sale and some people took the opportunity to acquire great art at very reasonable prices.

The visitors were invited to vote for their favourite piece, and the winner, who received the “People’s Choice” cup, was Jacob Taghioff of Adur Art Collective with his ‘Koi Carp’ oil painting. Seen here with Jane Osler the Chair of Brighton & Hove Arts Council.

Visitors came in ages and this young lady really enjoyed looking at the pictures.

Nine group members of BHAC submitted artworks, we were pleased to be able to support them in this way, after such a difficult year.

The groups were;

  • Adur Art Collective
  • Attic Art Club
  • Brighton Embroidery Group
  • Dupont Art Club
  • Peacehaven Art Club
  • Rottingdean Art Club
  • St Thomas More Art Group
  • Society of Catholic  Artists  (Sussex Regional Group)
  • Society of Sussex Painters,  Sculptors and Printmakers

Many thanks to the sponsors who helped support the show;
