In Conversation With:

Sir John Tomlinson, Michael Portillo
and Brighton Youth Orchestra

Hosted by Andrew Sherwood, (BYO) and Joe Townsend (Trinity Laban)
discussing their collaboration on Salamanca 1936

.

Brighton Youth Orchestra String Ensemble, Sir John Tomlinson and Michael Portillo delve into the intricate history of Salamanca 1936 and it’s emotive and musical impact on them all.   The panel will discuss the musical collaboration, showing excerpts of the documentary made during the process, followed by a live Q&A with the audience.

Salamanca 1936 was a labour of love for Brighton based composer Peter Copley.  The oratorio focusses on an incident during the Spanish Civil War, when Rector of the University of Salamanca Miguel de Unamuno stood up against the fascist General Millán Astray with the oratorio delivered by Sir John Tomlinson.  In a series of extended arioso passages, Unamuno’s internal struggle is passionately portrayed, with the chorus presenting the internal civil strife within the people.  In the final part, Unamuno’s internal conflict is emotionally depicted through his poem La Nevada es silenciosa, set in English for chorus.
