“The Jesuits, the Salon and Uncle Sam: The Art of the Philippines” – (online only)

Wed 24th February @ 7:30 pm

THE ARTS SOCIETY EAST SUSSEX

Lecture:  “The Jesuits, the Salon and Uncle Sam: The Art of the Philippines”

by Vivienne Lawes

The Philippines has a rich and well-established fine art tradition, introduced in the 18th century by resident Spanish Jesuits to provide religious imagery for the devout, and propaganda for the not-so-devout.  In the 19th century, Filipino artists working within the Western tradition, such as Juan Luna (1857-1899) and Felix Resurrecion Hidalgo (1855-1913), achieved success in the Salons of Europe, a direct result of access to formal art education at the new art schools of the Philippines.  The turn of the century saw American colonisation and led to a hybrid modernism in the artistic culture of the 20th century.  Today that culture has resulted in some of the most exciting contemporary art in Southeast Asia.  This lecture will include a discussion of some of the leading figures in the Philippine art world, with whom the speaker has worked directly as a curator.
