When Monet came to the Brighton and Hove French Circle

Did you know that Claude Monet’s famous artworks of the Thames were painted from his suites at the Savoy Hotel?

The Brighton and Hove French Circle were proud to welcome Senior Curator of Paintings at London’s Courtauld Gallery, Karen Serres, to speak about the sell-out Impressionist exhibition she has curated,

Mme Serres told our members and visitors how Monet chose rooms which offered panoramic views across the river, to the Houses of Parliament, Charing Cross and Waterloo Bridges.  He was inspired by the atmosphere of the foggy river, the smoke from the industries and the mysterious light they created.

Our upcoming talks include a look at art in France at the end of the 19th Century, and one of the few women to be honoured with a place in the Pantheon in Paris.- an American music hall star!
